Did size matter to our Bombshells?!

January 18, 2010

Height, we’re talking about, of course! Tonight’s new series of American’s Next Top Model (Living TV, 9pm) with Tyra Banks,  is a special ‘short’ series – all of the model wannabees are 5ft 7in and under- and it got us thinking here at BB HQ – just how tall – or not – were our favourite bombshells. So, we did a little research and we came up with the following measurements. (If you know differently – most of their heights have been disputed over the years – or have any others you think we’ve missed, then let us know!) Incidentally, almost every single one of them would qualify for tonight’s ANTM!

Jane towers over Marilyn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Coming in at the top end of the height scale is none other than Jane Russell at a lofty 5ft 8 – tall for her era – as was Italian bombshell Sophia Loren. Sophia was so much taller than co-star Alan Ladd, that it has been reported when they filmed Boy On A Dolphin, a trench was dug for Sophia to walk in! The beautiful Hedy Lamarr  was also quite tall, coming in at  5ft 7.

Ann Sheridan and Rita Hayworth were both a respectable 5ft6in, and Marilyn Monroe’s height is logged as 5ft 5 and 5ft 5.5  – we think Marilyn would have wanted the extra half inch! Gene Tierney had it, also measuring up at 5ft 5.5in, as did Ava Gardner.

Alan Ladd enjoys looking down on Veronica Lake!

Carole Lombard’s height has been recorded as 5ft 4 and 5ft 5, but Linda Darnell was definitely 5ft 4. Next in line is Lana Turner, who crept up to 5ft 3.5in, and below her at 5ft 2,  three giants of the silver screen – they may have been tiny, but their screen presence was huge – Bette Davis, Veronica Lake and our inspiration, Jean Harlow.

Alan Ladd, who starred in many movies with Ms Lake, had none of the trouble he had with Sophia Loren with this diminutive co-star!
