Bombshell on the Box – Marilyn alert!
THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Film Four, Sun Feb 14, 4.50pm
It may be best remembered for that iconic scene in which our bombshell of the week, Marilyn Monroe, stands over a subway grate as an underground train goes by – but that’s just one highlight of this classic comedy from director Billy Wilder.
Marilyn plays the unnamed girl who moves into the apartment upstairs from publisher Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) – just as his wife and kid move out of swelteringly hot Manhattan for the summer.
Marilyn gives one of her most appealing performances as the doe-eyed object of Sherman’s elaborate fantasies, while Tom Ewell, who played the part in the Broadway production of the original, much more risque, George Axelrod play, is terrific as her geeky, guilt-wracked would-be seducer.
And although she is only seen outside the apartment building that one time when she passes the subway grate, Marilyn gets through quite a few costume changes, including the vampy gown she wears (with unusually straightened hair) in her admirer’s Rachmaninov-fuelled fantasies…
