Bombshell on the Box – Marilyn alert!
THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, Film4, Mon Feb 22, 2.30pm & Fri Feb 26, 2.35pm
It’s not one of the best Marilyn Monroe films but this all-star musical does feature our blonde bombshell at her most ravishing, and she performs the definitive version of the song Heatwave, complete with a ridiculous Carmen Miranda-style costume.
Basically, this over-long movie is a hodge-podge of great songs from the back catalogue of the songwriting legend Irving Berlin.
And although Marilyn’s image may have been used to advertise it, she was not the leading female: Ethel Merman, the grande dame of Broadway, had that honour.
Marilyn steals the show, of course, thanks to Heatwave which, like the other production numbers in the film, was lavishly staged and designed for the widescreen. She also sings After You Get What You Want and Lazy.
Dan Dailey and Donald O’Connor (right) also star in this 1954 movie about a show-biz family.
And trivia fans may be interested to know that it was scripted by Phoebe and Henry Ephron whose daughters Nora and Delia are responsible for many recent romantic comedies.
