Style Focus – Jane’s Finest Fashions
If Marilyn seems to be giving Jane Russell, our bombshell of the week, a sideways glance in this image from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), it’s probably because she’s wondering if she would benefit from a halterneck too.
Jane may have been a talented comedienne, dancer and singer but it was that chest which made her name. So it’s no surprise to find that it was showcased in most of her screen outfits, many of which were in the afore-mentioned halterneck style – like the sexy top she wears with slim black trousers and strappy sandals for her Anyone Here For Love number (above and below) in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Jane was the sexiest (and most macho) thing in that number which she sang while a bunch of puny-looking athletes performed a highly camp routine.. Most of her halternecks, however, were dresses – like this lovely sundress from the 1951 drama His Kind of Woman.
The combination of Jane, her halterneck and Robert Mitchum was obviously deemed a winner – because the three of them were reunited the following year for the noirish melodrama Macao.
But it wasn’t all halternecks, as the slinky number she wore to sing One For My Baby (And One More For the Road) in Macao shows – see the video clip below. It highlights Jane’s slender figure and is perfectly accessorised with an unusual pair of earrings. After this movie, she was rarely seen singing in anything that, offscreen, wouldn’t be classed as sexy lingerie!
