Bombshell on the Big Screen – Marilyn and Jane Alert!
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, Edinburgh Filmhouse Cinema, now, until March 14, times vary
We loved seeing GPB in Glasgow last month, and this time you can catch the ultimate bombshell movie in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, at the Filmhouse Cinema. The run began on March 5, and it plays until Sunday.
In case you’re not familiar with the movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes stars two of our favourite bombshells, Marilyn Monroe, as Lorelei Lee, and Jane Russell as Dorothy Shaw – a pair of show girls.
Dorothy is the sassy one looking for love, and Lorelei, well, the blonde hoping to marry a millionaire of course! She has her sights set on Gus Edmond, a wealthy nerd stuck under his father’s thumb. When they take a transatlantic cruise to Paris, an undercover detective follows to find out if Lorelei is really a gold-digging schemer.
Unfortunately, the irrepressible Lorelei is a born flirt, and soon finds herself in a compromising position with Sir Francis Beekman (Charles Coburn), owner of a diamond mine. The girls have to use all their wits to get out of trouble and still find love and marriage.
Thanks to the talents of the luminous stars and director Howard Hawks, plus stunning Technicolor cinematography, GPB is one of the most charming, entertaining musicals of the 1950s.
There can’t be many better ways to while away a few hours than sitting watching this on the big screen.
