Oscar winning hair – Veronica Lake style

March 12, 2010

We adored Kate Winslet’s hair at the Oscars last Sunday – a true homage to gorgeous bombshell Veronica Lake. So, we wondered, how do we do it? Cara Sutherland found out.

Kate Winslet was one of the few stars who got it right on Oscar night – no messy up-do for her, oh no. The Reader star’s cascading waves and deep side parting were of particular note and looked to be inspired by one of our favourite 1940s bombshells, Veronica Lake.

Award winning hair stylist Mark Leeson, who is renowned for his beautifully polished finishing skills gave us his top tips on recreating the siren’s style.

King of colour Mark firstly complimented Kate’s shade choice.

“Kate’s golden blonde is seamless and expensive looking,” he said. “The warm tones accentuate her colourings perfectly and the finely woven creamy highlights around the hairline complete the look. It’s classic Hollywood but not trying too hard. Always ask your colourist for a full consultation, where they will take into consideration your eye and skin colour to help you choose the perfect bombshell blonde.”

But how to get the Veronica look? Mark explains – and it’s a lot easier than you may think: “Part your hair into a deep side parting – this will give the seductive Veronica Lake ‘peek-a-boo’ look. Blow-dry your hair with a large round brush to create volume and bounce, while at the same time smoothing the cuticle for that ever-important shine.

“Use large barrel curling tongs and work your way around the perimeter of your hair, curling from the cheekbones down. The larger the section of hair the wider and looser the curl, try alternating widths for a natural look, with a wider one at the very front.

“Once the hair has cooled, use a large, soft bristle brush and brush through the lengths to break the curls and dress the edges. Finish with a good spritz of shine spray – Goldwell Brilliance Radiant Star Shine Spray (£8.90,www.lookfantastic.com) is perfect for the bombshell look.”

Our favourite tongs for the job are Wahl’s large barrel tongs (from £7.99, www.wahl.co.uk). With these, you’re guaranteed waves Veronica would have been proud of.
