Our bombshell of the month, Bette Davis, obviously liked a bit of nail polish, and it seems this season we all ought to be paying our nails more attention. Which won’t be hard with Boots No7 new range of polishes, out next week.
No7’s Speed Dry (£6.75, www.boots.com, from March 24) features seven new shades for summer – Fuchsia Daze, Beanie (Boots answer to Chanel’s ‘greige’ shade), Beautifully Black, Poolside Blue, Queenlier, Violets and Grey Skies. We reckon Bette would have adored the intense colours in this range.
And, as they are called Speed Dry, she may not have had to blow as hard….!
While having a tan is not really a bombshell-criteria, some of our subjects did indeed have a bit of a golden glow at times. LIz Taylor loved a deep tan in her Richard Burton days; Brigitee Barot couldn’t help picking up some rays in the South of France, Farrah Fawcett was an all-American bombshell from California, so a bit of a tan was a necessity for her, and Jayne Mansfield wa another All-American gal who looked good with a hint of colour.
None of them however overdid it – there is no tango-ness in bombshell land we’re happy to report. But, sometimes, when the sun starts shining, we think wer look a little bit healthier with a hint of a golden glow. But, being all 2010 and sun-aware, we avoid the real thing, and get a bit of fake tan. We love Famous Daves Tanning Mousse, and now they’ve just launched a new Gold Edition which has no added fragrance and comes loaded with natural ingredients and anti-ageing extracts to offer the most luxurious and long-lasting tanning experience ever.
It’s paraben-free, and includes anti ageing pomegranate extract, aloe vera and Vitamin E among its ingredients. It’s also very easy to use – apply it to dry, unmoisturised skin with a tanning mitt or gloves and watch the colour appear instantly. The tan then develops in just a few hours into a long-lasting, totally natural-looking colour which lasts for up to seven days.
Famous Dave’s Tanning Mousse Gold Edition is £24.99, www.famousdave.co.uk.

RIVER OF NO RETURN, Film4, Thur Mar 18, 4.55pm
The director, Otto Preminger, hated making it, Marilyn claimed in later years it was her worst film, and Robert Mitchum allegedly spent most of it drunk. However, the fans love it, and Marilyn looks stunning – and sings four songs, among them the beautiful title track, River of No Return. Her saloon girl costumes are fabulous, and she proves here that she really can act.
The story is pretty basic: Matt Calder (Mitchum) , who lives on a remote farm with his young son Mark (Tommy Rettig) , helps two unexpected visitors who lose control of their raft on the nearby river.
Harry Weston (Rory Calhoun) is a gambler by profession and he is racing to the nearest town to register a mining claim he has won in a poker game. His attractive wife Kay (Marilyn), a former saloon hall girl, is with him. When Calder refuses to let Weston have his only rifle and horse, he simply takes them leaving his wife behind. Unable to defend themselves against a likely Indian attack, Calder, his son and Kay Weston begin the treacherous journey down the river on the raft Weston left behind.
The film was shot on location in Banff, Canada, and in CinemaScope, so TV viewing doesn’t really do it justice – but we say watch it anyway, of course! If only for the songs – enjoy the clip!
Our Bombshell of the Month, Bette Davis, had the most amazing eyes. While we can’t promise Bette Davis Eyes with this new eye cream from Darphin, we can recommend it as our favourite new eye cream coming out this Spring.
Darphin’s Wrinkle Corrective Eye Contour Cream (£39, www.darphin.co.uk, from April 1st) does three things – visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles, revives radiance and illuminates the eye area and restores suppleness and comfort to the eye area.
To reduce the fine lines and wrinkles, the cream contains various peptides and Hyaluronic Acid Spheres, which combine to smooth and repair the skin. Flobeads and Lipolight, Magnolia and Lady Thistle combine to reduce redness, reflect light and made the skin around the delicate eye area more radiant, and cotton oil, Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter, all rich in fatty acids, provide long-term protection against skin dehydration around the eye contour area, nourishing and softening it.
And, our favourite bit? As with all Darphin products, this new eye contour cream is delightful to use – it is beautifully scented with floral waters of Rose, Chamomile and Orange Blossom.
Bombshell beautiful eyes in a tiny jar!
Prestige Cosmetics make a pretty bold statement with their newest mascara – it’s called my LONGEST lashes (£6.49, www.boots.com, from March 24). But does it do what it says on the tin? Will it give you bombshell lashes like 1970s bombshell Goldie Hawn? (Well, okay, we reckon she was wearing false eyelashes here!)
Well, this mascara is a bit different – it won’t just add instant length to your lashes, it will actually strengthen them so that they become thicker, fuller and longer, naturally! Prestige’s Maxi Length Complex which is in the mascara, increases hair growth potential, nourishes and moisturises, and the lightweight formula of the mascara does also provide instant length and gives a lifting effect.
It’s innovative and affordable. And unlike Goldie, you may not even need the falsies with this!
We adore Bette – brilliant actress, rapier wit, amazing eyes, and attitude by the bucketload. During March we will focus on all things Bette, mixed win with other posts.

Perhaps the most important piece of a bombshell’s makeup is her lipstick. And now Chanel have brought all bombshells a whole new collection to choose from – Rouge Coco.
And rather than just introduce a new lipstick range for the sake of it, Chanel want Rouge Coco to mean something to a whole new generation of bombshell wannabees. Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of Chanel Makeup wanted to help create something that would inspire a whole generation of gloss wearers to return to lipstick with ease.
“I like the idea that women from the gloss generation, who are afraid of lipstick, can return to this essentially feminine beauty step with Rouge Coco,” he explains. “It fascinates me, because I’ve never seen a texture this comfortable and easy to apply. It’s the ready-to-wear lipstick. Just one sweep over the lips colours them and covers them in a melt-away balm.”
And it’s not just bombshell red that Chanel have on offer – the colour palette is HUGE. There are 30 new shades to choose from, from beiges, pinks, reds and browns. So you can be a Faye, a Jane, a Jayne or a Rita!
“I wanted the colour palette to be as accessible as the creamy texture,” Peter continues. “Of course, we have kept the iconic shades – such as coral Sari Doré, created with the very first launch in 1954, and Rouge Noir, launched in 1996 – but I also wanted to experiment with very subtle variations, half-tones of pink, red and brown.”
Our favourite of course is from the red palette – the wonderful Gabrielle, named after Mademoiselle Chanel herself, which we tried last month.
The whole collection is available now, £21, www.chanel.co.uk
