Bitching Bombshell

January 8, 2010

Miaow! Our favourite fiftysomething blonde bombshell, Miss Sharon Stone, has either been studying the bitching technique of the late, great Bette Davis, or is suffering from foot-in-mouth disease again.

In an interview with Tatler magazine this week, she says she reckons that movie star Meryl Streep – she of the most coveted cheekbones since Marlene Dietrich – looks like “an unmade bed”.

See for yourself: Meryl’s got a new film out today, It’s Complicated – her second big release of the last few months. As for checking out Sharon’s looks, well, you’d best look up the Dior skincare ads as roles in movies that anyone would want to see seem to elude her…

Bombshell on the Big Screen – Anita alert!

January 8, 2010

LA DOLCE VITA, GLASGOW FILM THEATRE, Sun 10 & Mon 11 January, 2010

Swedish bombshell Anita Ekberg has an iconic romp in the Trevi Fountain as she is pursued by a smitten Marcello Mastroianni in Federico Fellini’s classic 1960 movie. Mastroianni stars as a gossip columnist who covers “the sweet life” of the faded aristocrats, forgotten movie stars and ageing playboys of Rome’s social scene. There’s a cute kitten too. Watch the famous scene in full….and then get down to the GFT, Glasgow, to enjoy the movie in all its big screen glory.

Bombshell on the Box – Marilyn alert!

December 31, 2009

SOME LIKE IT HOT (ITV1, New Year’s Day, 12.30pm)

Marilyn Monroe, the queen of all the movie bombshells, oozes sensuality while giving one of her finest performances in this comedy masterpiece by Billy Wilder. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis star as two hapless jazz musicians who inadvertently witness the St Valentine’s Day Massacre and have to hot-foot it out of Chicago or else their guts will be garters for hoodlum Spats Columbo. The only safe means of escape is with a Florida-bound all-girl band whose singer is the all-woman Sugar Kane (Marilyn)… Boop-boop-de-doop!

Va-va Voom Lips

December 29, 2009

Forget collagen injections or those glosses that stimulate the blood supply to the lips, for a 1940s bombshell-style pout treat yourself to one of Rouge Dior’s fabulous Serum de Rouge lipsticks (£23). Not only do they transform puny pouts into luscious lips worthy of Hedy Lamarr (and if you don’t know who we mean, read all about her on our Bombshells page), but the colour is super-vibrant, lasts for ages and doesn’t dry lips out.

Bombshell on the Box – Rita alert!

December 22, 2009

GILDA (BBC2, Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, 2.10am)

Gorgeous, flame-haired bombshell Rita Hayworth’s most  famous role was as the femme fatale in this 1946 melodrama. The story’s not up to much; this movie is worth watching for one sequence alone: Rita’s sultry rendition of Put the Blame on Mame, complete with one of the sexiest stripteases (though all that comes off are the gloves!) in Hollywood history. Would-be bombshells watch how our Rita brushes – and tosses – her hair for maximum seductive effect…

Brittany Murphy

December 21, 2009

Like most, we were stunned by the news of Hollywood star Brittany Murphy’s sudden death on Sunday, at the age of just 32.

The star of movies such as Girl, Interrupted, Clueless, 8 Mile and the hilariously funny black comedy, Drop Dead Gorgeous, had a quirky beauty and we believe she was most definitely an honorary Bombshell.

Her saucer-like eyes, bold red lips and shiny hair made her look every inch the Hollywood star.

Brittany wanted more than anything to be a star, and moved to LA with her mother, Sharon, who sold up everything in New Jersey to help her daughter fulfil her dream.

Her career was up and down, her private life the same; rumours of drug addiction and eating disorders plagued her. She was nothing if not intriguing, in a typically Bombshell way.

And like all the Bombshells before her, she leaves a celluloid legacy that means she will live on long after her tragic death.

Bombshell on the Big Screen – Gloria alert!

December 9, 2009

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (cinemas nationwide, between now and Christmas)

Amongst all the wholesomeness of Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and their cute-as-Christmas  children in this 1946 classic, there’s a splash of slutty sex appeal and store-bought glamour in the slinky shape of blonde bombshell Gloria Grahame, who plays Violet, the town temptress of Bedford Falls … There are lessons to be learned from the way she sashays down the street,  flicks her hair and tells the men admiring her dress: “Why this ol’ thing? I only wear it when I don’t care how I look!”
